Case 1: Serous Cystadenoma of the Pancreas - Surgical Pathology Reimagined Book.


SEROUS CYSTADENOMA        

MORPHOLOGY

·   Gross: Multilocular, sponge-like, or honeycomb appearance with a central stellate fibrous scar

·   Microscopy: Cysts lined by a single layer of cells with defined cell borders

·   Composed of bland, uniform, cuboidal cells with clear, glycogen-rich cytoplasm and small round nuclei

·   Glycogen→ stains with PAS (and digested by diastase)

·   IHC: Positive for inhibin, cytokeratin, GLUT-1, and MUC6



OTHER HIGH YIELD POINTS

·   F: M ratio 3:1, usually seen in older women (>60 years of age)

·   Associated with von Hippel Lindau Syndrome (VHL)

·   Most are benign with excellent prognosis and low incidence of metastasis→ Serous cystadenocarcinoma
